22nd August 2005 - GLAMOROUS MOTHER AND DAUGHTER READY TO WOW
MISS GREAT BRITAIN JUDGES
Miss Great Britain today reveals a historic first in the world
of beauty pageants by unveiling a stunning mother and daughter
combination who will be competing against each other for a
coveted place in the 2006 final of the competition, which will
be held at The Grosvenor House Hotel, London on February 25
2006.
Glamorous fashion sales manager Philippa Wood, 40 and her student
daughter Cressida Grant, 17 are among the hundreds of entrants
who have been accepted to take part in the revamped version
of the UK’s oldest beauty pageant, first held in 1948.
Because all traditionally run beauty contests have always insisted
on upper age limits for contestants, no such family double
has ever before been possible.
But Robert de Keyser, who recently bought the rights to Miss
Great Britain in partnership with former Miss Great Britain
and TV presenter Liz Fuller, said: “Beauty can often
be ageless and as part of making Miss Great Britain a modern
celebration of beauty we decided to abolish a whole raft of
anachronistic old regulations which give other pageants a dated
look and tend to make them irrelevant to the 21st century.
“Not only is there no upper age limit but we are happy for mothers and
even grandmothers to enter – as long as they are confident that they
can compete in the beauty stakes – which no doubt Philippa
can!”
Philippa, who lives in Putney, South London, said: “Entering
a beauty contest was the last thing on my mind until my daughter
entered and then told me that she was glad she didn’t
have to compete with me! Then she pointed out that the rules
contained no upper age limits and started encouraging me to
enter as well for fun. I’m not sure how either of us
will do but we will both be rooting for each other.”
Cressida, who is studying for A-levels in (subjects) said: “Mum
is drop dead gorgeous and turns heads wherever she goes. I
really want to do well in Miss Great Britain but I just suspect
that Mum might get that little bit further.”
Miss Great Britain is staging 40 regional heats throughout
the nation this autumn and winners plus ten wild card entries
will compete at the Grosvenor House next February where a host
of celebrities will be in attendance. Judging will be through
a mixture of a high profile panel and an interactive audience
comprising more than 1,000 guests at the hotel as well as hundreds
of thousands of text voters.
MAY 2005 – A new organisation set
up between Liz Fuller - Former Miss Great Britain and Robert
De Keyser- fashion entrepreneur marks the beginning of a
new direction for the longest established national pageant.
Being relaunched as a modern celebration of British beauty
featuring Pop Idol-style interactive voting giving the audience
its say alongside that of the expert judges in the choice of
the final winner.
The pageant will launch in 40 towns throughout
the British Isles with thousands of beautiful women competing
in regional heats at some of the nation’s top night clubs
for a coveted place in the final to be held at the Grosvenor
House Hotel, London on 25 February 2006.
The ultimate line-up
of 40 regional winners will be complemented by ten wild card
entries who will be able to make a special case for inclusion
in the final.
Unlike other tired old beauty pageant formats
the new-look Miss Great Britain will not restrict those eligible
to enter by imposing a host of old fashioned rules on entrants.
For example there will be no upper age limit and no bar on
women with children entering.
